Help bring life back into an ancient woodland
We’d love you to get involved in woodland restoration here at Comar Wood – your help will make a difference to the woodland ecosystem and, hopefully, bring physical and mental benefits to you as well!
- Spend time outdoors in nature
- Help look after an ancient woodland in need of attention
- Enjoy doing worthwhile manual tasks in the company of others
- Learn new skills
We have been fortunate to receive a grant from The Pebble Trust to enable us to run a series of volunteering sessions and a free workshop in Comar Wood, to help restore the ancient woodland. Please read on for details.
Monthly volunteering sessions
Volunteering sessions will be held once a month on Saturdays (normally the last Saturday of the month) over the autumn and winter.
Next session: Saturday 21st March 2026, 10.30 till 3
- Sessions will be relaxed affairs with a range of tasks that suit different energy levels.
- Tasks will focus on clearing the Sitka spruce trees that were planted on the ancient woodland, including: cutting small trees (with hand tools); pruning low branches off larger trees; clearing brash; hand-pulling or lopping of baby spruce trees.
- At lunchtime we will stop for a brew and some homemade soup by the fire.
- Children are welcome, but must be supervised by an adult at all times.
- Tools and gloves will be provided. Please wear sturdy, waterproof footwear.
Please contact Carolyn: 07732719671 for more information and to let us know you’re planning to come along. See below for our location.

Free workshop: Axe and saw small tree felling
We held our ‘axe and saw small tree felling workshop’ workshop on 25th October: a great day in the woods! Ten participants joined Angus Simpson of Acheilidh Heritage Croft, who shared his brilliant skills and knowledge with us.
We learned about axe uses and sharpening before heading into the woods to practice using axes and saws for felling and processing some of the small spruce trees. The rain cleared and the sun shone for us, making a beautiful afternoon. Everyone went home with some new skills and all limbs and digits still attached!
Thanks to Angus for running a great workshop and to The Pebble Trust for providing the funding.
We hope to run more workshops and events at Comar Wood in the future. Please get in touch with Carolyn on 07732719671 if you are interested in hearing about upcoming events.
